Phyllis, you gave me a thought about something ..   Maybe we could use some trusted volunteer(s) members to handle a "purse check" service at the RYD events?       The attendees could give them their purses and get a claim # back, so that way when they go to get it back they make sure it gets back to the right member ..

One problem with holding events and parties at hotels is that the hotel usually doesn't have the security staff (or frankly, the "motivation") to keep an eye on their guests' property outside the security of their rooms ..  Disreputable people know that people at such events are "partying-hearty", have their guards down a bit as a result, and take advantage of the stiuation sometimes, as we saw happen here ..

Is that a good idea, dumb idea, bad idea?

Since it's all Sean-of-the-Living's fault, I nominate that he or someone at the clothing exchange handle this service ..          hehehe   j/k Shawn ..

DUMB idea.  We're all responsible adults here and have all learned a BIG lesson about trust.  I'm pretty sure we don't need the purse police at a future event.

Hi Sean and TMB-

I want you to notice that I wrote my post as "a social gathering" instead of the conference. I feel that what happened does not have ANYTHING to do or reflect in ANY way the conference itself. I am the one who naively left my purse laying on a table. I have a naive attitude that everyone is kind and no one would ever do anything mean to anyone. I realize that's very Pollyanna. This same thing could have happened at my work place or a social event at another location. Again, this in NO way had ANYTHING to do with RYD.

If we as TMB decide to forgo a conference for fear that something like this could happen again then people like Charlene have totally won the war....  how sad would that be? As an individual I deserve more than to let people like her victimize me any further! I have ALREADY paid my conference fees and plan on being there! Will I leave my purse laying on a table again? Nope! Will I assume that EVERYONE in the room is as honest as the day is long? Probably so- that's my style!

PLEASE don't let this crazy incident keep you or anyone else from receiving the blessings that a WLS conference can do for you. I have come away with so much from each and every conference. Again, I have already paid my conference fees and can't wait to attend the next one!

See you in September!

Tracey

We Can Do Hard Things

Unfortunately, any time you get alot of people together, there are going to be a few who take advantage.  That is in any population of people.  If you went out to dinner, you would take your purse with you to the restroom for that reason.  We just get so close to some people because of our common experiences and all the sharing we do, and we forget to protect ourselves.  Don't let these things discourage anyone from attending events.  On a whole, the conferences are very rewarding.  And we should be going in public and doing things despite the risks because that is part of life.  I'm still not used to stepping out into the public, but I'm learning.  I still think that the people I've met through support groups and OH are the best, and most of them would go out of their way to help someone else, not hurt them.

Let's start with Anyone stupid enough to "blame the event" won't get much out of it anyway.  Secondly, NO ONE blames Walmart when their purse is stolen out of their shopping cart sooooo

NO PITY PARTY!!!!!

A thief looks for opportunity and means.  I'm betting this thief went SPECIFICALLY with the INTENT to help her sticky-handed self to whatever she could!  It's a sad commentary on things but CRAP HAPPENS EVERYWHERE.  Are we all to blame for gathering and providing her with ample victims?  I think not.  She's a thief and she made the CHOICE to steal and then again the CHOICE to use her ill gotten gains.  Nasty damn criminals!!!

My thoughts EXACTLY Kris!!  When Sean first posted i thought who are these people that would consider cancelling event tickets cuz someone got a credit card stolen?  To me, that made no sense at all.  Just like the people that keep repeatedly posting.."what happened"???  Read yesterday's posts and if you still have questions then ask...sorry for the rant, been a LONG frustrating 24 hrs...

Yeah I can relate...I had a long, frustrating 24 hours a couple weeks ago over this and MY post.  Thought about not even posting anything to any of this this time.

What floored me about your post from a couple of weeks ago is that OH took it down!!!!  They did not stop Her from posting but took down a good member's post.

Steamed me big time.  Not fair
